About Jenna Greenfield Art

I am a self-taught figurative and portrait artist based in Denver, Colorado.

There is a depth and complexity that only a human subject can bring to a piece. The entire inner world of the subject challenges to be brought out and woven into the art. The most beautiful and powerful pieces dig deep into the inner world of subject, artist, and viewer, and meld all three into a unique tapestry.

I fell in love with soft pastels in my high school art room. I was drawn to their fluidity, and the direct, hands-on approach to applying and maneuvering the medium. It is raw and intuitive- nothing between me and the art.

At 17, I was on the verge of a formal art education, enrolled in Boston University Art School, when I decided to steer my path differently. I set art aside, and would not come back to it for over 15 years.

It has now been about a decade since I found my way back, and I gradually have come to immerse myself in it. I have studied color and technique with the same rigor with which I once studied medicine, determined to make up for lost time. It has felt like a second chance to go back and choose art. At 17, I thought I couldn't have both. At 46, I say "Watch me."

Artist Biography

At 17, I had to choose between my two loves: art and science. I was accepted to and enrolled in Boston University School of Art for the fall of 1996. But that summer, I got cold feet, and decided to pivot and go down what I saw as the safer career path. I studied biology, graduating from the university of Colorado with a degree in biology. I then went on to study medicine at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, followed by residency training at UCSD in San Diego. In 2008, I moved back to Colorado, where I took a job in Denver as an emergency room physician.

It was a few years later, after washing away the last of the blood sweat and tears that still clung to me from my training years, that I opened an old box where my sketchbooks and pencils had been waiting patiently for me. I brushed off the dust, and over the next several years I slowly became reacquainted with my art.

I have now spent the last decade becoming an artist again, and I have loved every minute of it. I live in Lakewood, CO with my two teenagers, my two cats, and my small art studio, which is steadily spilling out of the corner of my bedroom, where I spend most of my free time.

Jenna's paintings are truly captivating. Her use of color and texture is mesmerizing. I am so happy to have one of her pieces in my collection.
